Today the Aion 4.0 banner went back up on the Korean Aion site and it included new information about the soon to be released 4.0 patch. The maximum character level is being raised to 65 and several new skills or different ways that skills can be used have been released as well.

The translation of the skills now appears below (thanks to Kalsteine!) and is followed by the Korean text for those that read Korean.

The first set of skills introduced are survival skills.

  • Magical Defense - Gladiator : For a short duration, increases your magic suppression, but lowers your magic resistance.

  • Quick Dash - Ranger : Removes all movement debuffs and teleports a short distance to the front.

  • Sprint - Cleric : Temporarily increases movement speed.

  • Dimensional Escape - Chanter : Teleports and decreases enmity.

The second set of skills designed around RVR and are skills that do AOE damage.

  • Judgement Strike - Templar : Strong physical damage attack to one target.

  • Leap Smash - Gladiator : Leap towards the enemy and strike the ground, damaging the enemies around the target.

  • Cheap Strike - Assassin : Can only be used during stealth and causes massive damage, stunning the target if they're attacked from behind.

  • Timed Inferno - Sorcerer : After a short period of time 3 meteors are summoned to a targeted area and they cause AOE damage.

  • Spirital Storm - Spiritmaster : Your elemental causes AOE damage and puts the enemy in a “Pushed Back” state. After execution of the skill, the summoned spirit despawns.

Posted Image

The third set of skills are probably the most interesting, because it mentions specifically that they are skills that are charged up, so that the player can adjust their time charging up the skill for different effects.

  • Hypnosis - Sorcerer : You put your target to sleep with the sleep duration depending on the charge duration.

  • Healing Rays - Cleric : an AOE heal with the amount of health that's healed depending on the charged duration.

  • Death Strike - Chanter : The enemy is struck with great might and the damage increases the longer the skill is charged.

The article also mentions how combo skills have been lacking and suggests that they will receive some help in Aion 4.0.

Sounds like 4.0 is going to be an interesting patch.

Cheers,

KR Aion 4.0 was released to the Korean Public Test Server on the 5th of December and the full Korean patch notes are available. While waiting for a formal translation to be done by Kalsteine, the main parts of the notes are that:

  • 4.0 will be released in 3 parts with the first going live in December (with the Gunner class), the second going live in January (with the Bard class), and the last going live after that (with the Mech class)
  • The level cap has been raised to 65 and there are skills that go with that. I asked our translator to give us full translations for existing classes of the skills. They don't include the new skills introduced at earlier levels however and English names may not be the same as the Korean names. We'll be working on getting some of the new lower level skills out.
  • There are some new areas, instances, and even a new fort

Here are some images taken by our correspondent on the Korean PTS. For those that are convinced the Gunner is a manly mans class, you may want to take a look at the Gunner trainer you hit at the first town as an Elyos. The Bard trainer is also there, although you can't yet play the Bard class.

New Community Program with Beginning GM Privs at NA NCsoft

In a forum post today Nyx mentioned the start of a community volunteer program where players that are volunteers may have access to beginning level GM characters whose only abilities are to teleport and be invisible. These characters will assist in a streaming PvP tournament that will be held on Saturday and will allow both refs and streamers to be out of the way.

In the same post, Nyx stated that these characters will never be allowed to ban players as that's the job of the real GMs.

One hopes that the newbie GMs will only have their powers during special events such as the PvP match and that they can't wander outside of the confines of the event. Otherwise, be prepared to put on your tinfoil hats for a wild ride.

Player-Created Design Chosen

Instrument designs were sent in for Aion's up-and-coming Bard class for a chance at having the design made into an in game weapon. A butterfly-inspired instrument by Sérgio Kishino, also known as Seey on the Tiamat server was chosen by the design team. Congratulations go out to Sérgio for his design getting picked!

There is a video and interview on the NA Aion Online site that are repeated below.

Aion: How long have you been playing Aion?

Sérgio: Tiamat server...I think 1 year.

Aion: What level is your sorcerer, Seey?

Sérgio: Level 60.

Aion: What was the inspiration for your design?

Sérgio: I had no internet (technical problems) from 12/24 to 12/29, so I decided to draw... @.@"

The 1st step was creating an outfit inspired by Guardian Commander + Kahrun (female cloth), with a blue butterfly and golden details. 2nd step, creating a weapon with same concept!

Aion: How excited were you to hear that your design had been chosen?

Sérgio: Unbelievable! Omg, Where are the cameras?! :o

Aion: Have you created any other Aion-related works?

Sérgio: Not yet, but it is a good idea! I do have one Kamel, from Lineage 2.

Every year, while the Koreans have a New Year's festival, Atreia celebrates its very own City Festival. This year, the City Festival will take place between the 6th to 27th of February in EU Aion.

During the festivities however, not everything is running smoothly: The Shugo flu is spreading and lots of helpers are bedridden. The remaining Event Staff got their hands full with obtaining materials (like Comet Powder and White Ribbons) for the festival in time.

Help the Event Staff and receive coins as a reward. You can redeem these coins by visiting Glaion (Sanctum) or Adole (Pandaemonium) for temporary costumes you can wear on the City Festival.

This maintenance will kick off the new instance event called Shugo Kingdom Adventure. Brave the Shugo Imperial Tomb and be transformed into a Shugo! Protect your towers from waves of enemies and get the tomb's treasure.

The following changes will be implemented on Asmodian incentive surveys and Adventurer's Guide surveys on Wednesday, March 27, so make sure to claim your incentives before that date:

  • Tiamat has shown a dramatic increase in server population! To reflect the current active population, we will be depreciating the Asmodian incentive surveys on Tiamat.
  • The 50e set will only be able to be claimed by level 51 characters on Siel and Israphel.
  • The Tier 2 Crucible weapon will only be able to be claimed by level 55 characters on Siel and Israphel.
  • The Adventurer's Guide surveys will be retired.

Wealth Lockboxes Available During March

Beginning Wednesday, February 27, Wealth Lockboxes will begin dropping in place of Combat Lockboxes all over Atreia. You will need a Wealth Lockbox key in order to open it. As with Combat Lockbox Keys, you can get these in-game, purchase them from another player, or buy them on the Black Cloud Marketplace.

Lockboxes will be rotated monthly, so expect to see Combat Lockboxes back in couple of months. Please note that if you have a Combat Lockbox Key, it will not open a Wealth Lockbox - but don't throw it away because Combat Lockboxes WILL be back.

Wealth Lockboxes can provide you with different kinds of wealth. Atreia has many currencies, and most of them can be gained as a treasure from this box. The table below shows all possible drops from the Wealth Lockbox.

Nobody and the KR Aion 4.0 Male Bard

$

So I've seen a lot of footage for the female bard and have been wondering what happened to the male bard in 4.0. I was lucky enough to be able to find out this weekend when I went through levels 1-20 on the KR PTS server on Saturday. Please keep in mind that this is the PTS server version and so it's possible that some skills may slightly differ from what's on retail in Korea right now.

Right away upon seeing the entry screen, I knew what kind of character I wanted to create.

Posted Image

I figured I could do the perfect maestro type character and even gave him the little wings. Yes, I know they don't carry over into real character creation, but they looked cool on the character creation screen.

Posted Image

Of course, that didn't really prepare me for what I actually did get upon character creation. Why is my bard wearing weird burnt orange pedal pushers? Another oddity that I discovered was that while the female bard has all sorts of interesting and girlish flourishes, the male bard apparently shares the same animation set and ummm... yeah... let's just say that it gets a little bit awkward when your manly maestro is wandering around and flourishing all over the place like a girl.

Posted Image

Bard Skills from Levels 1-18

Posted Image

By level 18, I was pretty used to the odd animations and had gotten into the swing of playing a bard. The bard had 2 buffs by this level. One was a shield buff similar to what mages receive (called Shield Buff I) and the other was an HP increase buff (Health Melody increases HP by 10%). The bard also had a skill that restored mana (Mind Melody I) enabling me at this level to grind mobs without really stopping. Additionally, there were 2 heal skills where one heal chained off of the other one (Healing Melody I and Gentle Melody I).

The following video shows the skills as I level up. Please forgive some of the odd pauses as there's some skill lag caused by my extreme distance from the Korean servers. The only skills not used in the video are the slowing debuff (very similar to what SM's have and called Heavy Song I), the mana restoration skill, and the secondary heal skill that chains off of the heal that is shown.

The initial skill that all bards receive was a wind throwing damage skill (Windy Song I). I was surprised that bards get the penguin sleep skill by level 5 - though sadly it only turns 3 things into penguins (I never saw it go over that up through level 20) and it's rather awkward to use since it's a direct aoe around where you're standing. I admit that I managed to kill myself once by running around and gathering mobs to try and get more than 3 of them to sleep.

Throughout all my levels, the skill that received the most use was Battle Song as it's the main dps spell that bards have at this level. I always started out with it due to the long charge up time as it's the spell that charges up to 3 times. That spell could then be followed up with the couple of other dps spells I had at that point (Frost Song goes into Flame Song) . The first bard DP ability (Siel's Fury) is a DPS skill that hit the first boss in Haramel pretty hard as shown in the video above. I started adding the slow dot Cutting Song I into the mix in order to kill just a bit quicker.

Bards receive a reasonable number of CC abilities for this age range - I was easily able to CC enemies using root and the penguin skill that I had received by level 18. There's also a slow that I could have used if I was grinding elites. Unfortunately, I had many times where regular mobs just resisted my skills (mob hatred QQ). I found the bard a little harder to use for kiting than an SM, since most of the bard skills have cast times and some of them are very long for max dps. It does look like bards get more CC later on though, so I'd expect them to be good at kiting.

But is the Bard Fun?

So the male bard looks rather funny, but is he fun to play? I actually thought he was and the one charge up skill was a pleasant surprise. Rather than a regular 3-5 second cast nuke, it gave me a choice to leave the cast early and do something else at the penalty of less damage done. I have a feeling at higher levels this will be worth more, especially when things break CC, although sometimes I admit that I did double hit the attack and end the cast before I wanted to during my play on Saturday.

Through level 20 I used most of the skills I obtained and could see the utility of the ones I didn't commonly use. The penguin sleep isn't as useful as I first thought it would be due to how close things need to be to you for the aoe, but then it turns things into penguins and it's just funny because of that. As a class, the bard seemed to share more in common with the mage archetype than the healer archetype. At this level it's very definitely a dps class with a couple of buffs and heals.

I can see why the bard would be a strong PvP contender even with the skill mix I have at this level. Maybe I'll get more of a chance to check this out at some point.

Cheers,

Aion 4.0 to Hit NA Servers in June

Looks like the cat is out of the proverbial bag that Aion 4.0 is launching in June (obtained from the NA forums). It'll be called the "Dark Betrayal" expansion and will be the equivalent of Korean Aion patch 4.2. This particular patch has both the Bard and Gunslinger classes in it.

Posted Image

Additionally, in order to celebrate the first anniversary of Aion going free to play, there will be events from April 10th through 17th. There will be a Decorate the Cake event (where you collect aether flames to trade for candles for the cake). There will be special offers from the Black Cloud Marketplace, including some supposedly free items.

A Fond Farewell to Nyx

Nyx (Felicia Johnson) started at NCsoft West in 2009 and worked with Lineage until the game was shut down in NA. She then moved over to work with the community team for Aion where she helped out a lot with the forums in particular and was very highly regarded by the community. In a past life Nyx was an inner city school teacher and the skills she learned while doing that seem to have translated over very well for working with the Aion community.

Posted Image

After Phenteo left, Nyx was promoted to CM. She was the fifth in the line of CM's for Aion (including Trine's short stand in), but she will be sorely missed. It's a shame that Aion isn't doing very well, so the office is moving to California and several people including Nyx had to be let go. Nyx has a great sense of humor that will be remembered.

Posted Image

She once posted the following description of her job in response to a player post.

Posted Image

She really pushed for player run tournaments on different servers and helped a lot with promoting community. What a lot of people don't know is that she also helped a lot with individual problems. Just going back and looking at the twitter account that has gone dark since she left shows that and she was the one we went to when somebody on our forum had a customer service problem that just wasn't getting figured out very fast.

Nyx was the voice of the community back to NCsoft West. She helped stop the mandatory account migration where we would lose all our multiple use account items such as pets. When we were unhappy, she brought it back to the NCsoft team. Things didn't always work out and the team didn't always listen, but she tried her hardest to let the NCsoft West team know what the community thought.

Posted Image

The community liked Nyx so much that they stalked characters they thought could be her. It'll be a shame if her mansion with halloween decorations is let go. Here's an image of a character that was stalked that wasn't Nyx from a thread on the official forums.

Posted Image

Nyx had to have felt funny about strange people trying to stalk her character, but she always laughed and shrugged it off.

Posted Image

I'm sure that Nyx needed a break from the hectic life of a community manager. Sometimes, it's so hard being the person caught in the middle between a community and a game company.

Posted Image

Especially, when the game company is NCsoft West.

Posted Image

I'd like to wish Nyx a great and relaxing time off of work and wonderful luck in finding an awesome job for the future. Everybody keep their fingers crossed for her to send good vibes her way. I'm fairly sure that most of us would consider playing a game that had Nyx as the CM just because she's so awesome.

We will miss you Nyx!

Aion EU Finally to Get the Rookie Server

$

It looks like EU Aion is finally catching up to NA Aion with the introduction of the rookie server in tomorrow's patch. It's unknown if the addition of the rookie server will have the same effects as the NA version of the server, but I'm linking to the game guide version of it just in case.

Posted Image

It looks like the patch will bring the EU servers back into line with what's currently on the NA servers as demonstrated by the conglomeration that's available in the official patchnotes. Of particular note, the patchnotes include 3.7 as well as the current patch. Gameforge is currently calling the patch 3.9 as adding in the rookie server (obtained much earlier for NA people) is a major patch.

Some of what are in the notes were a part of a minor patch applied on NA servers January 30th, 2013 , so it looks like the NA and EU servers are both at around the same patch.

We are still waiting for the original patch notes, but they should be closely related to the Korean patch notes for 4.0.

Aethertech Class Announced for KR Aion 4.5

Korea is running a video of their new mech class to be released in Aion 4.5. It seems like a rather odd class addition, what do you think? Do please note that it doesn't appear to be up on the KR test server yet, so we can't check it out for real.

KR 4.5 Aethertech Class Exclusive

The Aethertech class is now out on the Korean test server and I spent the day having a look at it. I'm not the only one either - Vashiro has a twitch TV stream out:

http://twitch.tv/vashiro/

Some short preliminary patch notes have been posted on the official forums and then re-posted on our forum for discussion. Make sure to check them out as they contain some information about the new class, several new instances, and new level 65 skills for existing classes.

For Korea, big-headed characters are now in vogue as the bigger your character is, the better it can be seen in the mech suit and the bigger the mech suit itself will be.

Posted Image

I spent my time with the Aethertech class and made a video of up to level 25.

Overall, the class felt like a mech. It seemed a little heavier even when I jumped and that made it seem tough and like a tank should be. Flight was awesome with the rockets in the back. I liked it better than the wings and it fit better with the mech look. The class appears to be slated as a tank - you gain your first aggro skill at level 10 and buff that up with a shield skill a little later.

Posted Image

The main skills had one common theme - using the big arms to hit things in different ways. The punching felt satisfying and big. At level 10 I had the long wind up big hit skill, a punch that had a secondary to punch with the opposite hand, and a one handed short range rocket shooting skill that you could shoot on the go. The rocket shooting skill seemed most useful for pulling. When I'd reached level 26 these hitting skills had been joined by another skill, which looked like I was doing a double handed swat of something in front of me. It would be amusing if it was a player.

Posted Image

Over the course of the day, I gained a cone-shaped aoe frost skill, a couple of electrical lightning attacks, a short charge to the front (doesn't seem to need a target), and the shield skill. Unfortunately, my large ping to Korea meant that the charge rubberbanded consistently. I caught this in the video - it's possible that the devs aren't considering large ping times yet and so rubberbanding on that skill is particularly bad.

Overall the class wore chain and it was the weapon itself (which looked like a key) that allowed for the mech transformation. The transformation key is a toggle and you can either have the toggle on to be a mech or off to be a human. All of your main skills need the mech to be on unless you go back to the original gunner skills obtained before level 10. The one issue I found with this is that weapon swapping doesn't work with the mech - it just toggles the suit off. Then if you're in combat there's a 9 second cooldown to put the mech back on. This penalty seemed rather stiff for a button that could be accidentally hit. I made sure to put the button as far away from my main keys as I could get it.

Unlike when I first played the Songweaver, the Aethertech felt very gear dependent and for people that like weaving, it seemed like a good class for it. It reminded me more of a Templar than any of the other classes and I have a feeling that it's going to really start to shine at higher levels. It will be interesting to see how it shapes up and where it fits in with the other classes. As a chain wearing class, it seems unlikely to unseat Templars and it's unclear where its dps will sit at maximum level.

Still, it was fun running around as a large character randomly punching things. I only wish I hadn't missed whatever event gave everybody dragon costumes as they looked rather neat when they suiting up in the mech as a dragon.

Maintenance of AionSource

The forums are now on new production servers (shiny, shiny) and you may notice that you need to clear your browser cookies from last night in order to login correctly. I took some time to also clean up the forums a bit - some of the categories haven't been used in ages and it was time to sweep them away.

You'll notice that I moved some community items (like introductions) a little further up the list so that you can hopefully all spend some time saying hello to the newbies. It was kind of buried in the forum list before. I also moved the general legion list up so that people can more easily spot it since some people do still seem to occasionally use it.

Thought I'd share the a nice quote that got hidden with the Curse Premium forum. It's basically Ayase (the original Aion EU Community Manager) and Knite (who later became Associate Producer for NA Aion - Sean Orlikowski) helping to test out the permissions on the forum. The whole thread was rather amusing, but this one part was the best.
